I think we celebrate something for someone by giving a gift.
For example, when my friend's birthday is coming, I go to buy a present for him/her, choose something best for the friend, and give my friend it. It may be normal thing, but it would make my friend happy or delight. Therefore, I think gift is a feeling of someone who gives a gift to friend: accordingly, we don't have to buy expencive gift, we just give a gift that we can show our feeling of celebration.

To Hitomi:Not yet... lol I tried to get Christmas gift for my boyfriend but I couldn't find anything he wants so I have to go find it. I feel sense of incongruity with having a Cristmas because there is no snow in Hawaii!
